Editing the BOM structure of an assembly part
Whether you’ve uploaded a CAD file and now need to adjust the extracted BOM structure, or made an error while building a BOM from scratch for a PDF part, there are a couple of tools available that you can use to make changes to an existing tree. We call this toolset the Better BOM Builder, which includes:
- Changing the BOM quantity of a child part
- Converting a subassembly part to a part with hardware
- Moving a child part up a BOM level
- Moving a child part down a BOM level.
Changing the BOM quantity of a child part
- Navigate to the Assembly components section of the quote item.
- Make sure that you are in the Child BOM view.
- To change a component quantity, click the blue number in the Node Qty column and type the new desired quantity. Press ENTER to confirm.
- Keep in mind that this will change the quantity of the component at the specific level you are in. If you are not in a subassembly, that's the number of child parts per quote item. If you are within a subassembly, that's the number of components per subassembly, so the total number of components per assembly part will be the quantity per subassembly multiplied by the quantity of subassemblies.
Converting a subassembly to a part with hardware
- Click the three dots next to the part you want to convert.
- To convert a child assembly part, click the three dots next to the subassembly in the Assembly components section.
- Select Replace assembly with manufactured component. This will open the BOM restructuring drawer.
- Select which part should become the parent component (i.e. the part you will be making) and click Confirm.
- Once you confirm, the assembly structure will be deleted and replaced by a manufactured part. Any parts that you do not select will become children of your selection.
- Only manufactured components can be assigned as the new parent part. If you don’t see the part you want to select listed as an available option, confirm that it is not a purchased component before proceeding.
- To view the hardware in this new structure, use the navigation bar or navigate to the Components section of the new parent part.
Moving a child part down a BOM level
- Navigate to the Assembly components section of the quote item.
- Make sure that you are in Child BOM view.
- Click the three dots next to the component that you want to move.
- Select Move down a BOM level. This will open the BOM restructuring drawer.
- Select the subassembly that you want to move the component underneath.
- Use the Current level and Lower level fields to assign how many components should be at each level after the move.
- For instance, if there are two instances of this component in the assembly and you only want to move one of them down a level, type "1" in the Lower level field and "1" in the Current level field.
- Click Confirm to move the component(s).
- Confirm the new structure is correct by checking the tree in the navigation bar.
Moving a child part up a BOM level
- Navigate to the Assembly components section of the quote item.
- Make sure that you are in Child BOM view.
- Click the three dots next to the component that you want to move.
- Select Move up a BOM level. This will open the BOM restructuring drawer.
- Use the Current level and Upper level fields to assign how many components should be at each level after you move.
- For instance, if there are two instances of this component in the assembly and you only want to move one of them up a level, type "1" in the Upper level field and "1" in the Current level field.
- Click Confirm to move the component(s).
- Confirm the new structure is correct by checking the tree in the navigation bar.
Note: If you are moving a top-level component up a level, this will move the component out of the assembly and create a new quote item.
